The title of best band in synthpop is a torch that has been carried by quite a few bands over the years. Sometimes more than once. Heavyweights like Depeche Mode, OMD, Pet Shop Boys, and New Order were standard bearers for years. Before them pioneers like Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, and Devo paved the way. Somewhere in the mid to late 90’s synthpop started to fade from the limelight into a musical subculture. Out of that subculture grew a whole new generation of synthpop acts that were able to do things their own way because labels weren’t breathing down their necks for the next big hit, the next big tour, the next disposable flash in the pan. During that time a band from Bristol was forming that probably had no idea they would one day be carrying the flag of best synthpop band, but that’s exactly what Mesh are. Don’t believe me? Let me prove it.
Mesh have been consistently putting out well written and catchy tracks for over 20 years, and over that span they’ve grown by leaps and bounds. Very few bands can claim to one up themselves as often as Mesh has been able to. Their brand of synthpop infused with rock swagger is not only unique to them it’s also steeped in familiar tropes, enough so that it feels like music you’ve always known about (but didn’t….because before Mesh it didn’t exist). If you’re not a fan of Mesh it has to be because you’ve not heard them before. Check out the songs below and give them a follow on social media. They’re active and they love their fans.
