Cover of the Night: Gus Gus Covering Depeche Mode’s Monument

Depeche Mode covers are a dime a dozen and more often than not they’re not very good. It’s the curse of being such a widely influential band. I’m a huge fan of cover songs but weeding through them for the best of the best can be painful. Even on major label cover albums like For the Masses, which included big name artists like The Smashing Pumpkins, The Deftones, Rammstein, and The Cure, you’re only left with a handful of passable covers. One such cover rises to the top, and it’s not only good – it surpasses the original (gasp!). Iceland’s Gus Gus took a fairly unmemorable track from 1982’s A Broken Frame and turned it into something special. Their version of Monument stands tall as an example of how to keep the heart of a song but make it your own. Compare them below and enjoy your cover of the night!
